Becoming Extraordinary
Welcome to the new year
Academics can be funny in a way because of the way we plan our year. We're running around trying to get ready for the new year while the rest of the world is in the dog days of summer. Still, despite being bummed that summer is winding down I'm pumped that a new school year is about to begin.
I confess I've been watching a fair amount of Olympics. The US women's team ruled against Brazil in the gold medal game. Way to play D! I think the department should form a new international handball team! That game looks fun.
The GOP & Dem conventions will start soon. However, they are not as much fun as they used to be in the good ol' days of back room deals in smoke filled rooms (see 1920). We're probably better off that way, but still...
The History Department is going to have a big year. We're going to be searching for a new person to teach world and Asian history. We've got several books in various stages of being done, a couple of them should appear this academic year. We're offering a new seminar class just for incoming students.
